Week 36 - Last Week of 1st Grade!
Caleb had a great week, finishing up some projects and enjoying his last days as a 1st grader.
He completed his clock worksheets in math. For Language Arts he made up a story to go along with some drawings he made. He read books from the library, we almost finished Little House on the Prairie (we'll finish this weekend) and Caleb signed up for the local library's summer reading program. He was given a Reading Passport, which he wrote his name, city, and age in. As he reads books during the summer, he will write down what he has read and every time he brings his passport into the library, they will give his completed pages special stamps. We also look forward to attending the summer reading events the library has planned this year. Hearing some science stories, planting his sunflower starts, practicing handwriting worksheets, an afternoon of art collages, and a messy water play activity in a friend's backyard, helped round out his week. Today, Caleb helped make a pie for our end-of-the-year family celebration. What was Caleb's favorite part of 1st grade? "Doing Art projects and reading has been my favorite thing to do!"

Smiley
Is "Smiley" a nickname? I really like that name. I have a son named "Bear."
I'm glad you like to play outside. Too many kids just want to watch TV and play video games!
I bet your wind chime is going to turn out great! You can keep that for a long time.
Do you think deer could get to your compost? They would probably like some of the stuff you are putting in there.
I really like the poem you wrote down about spring.

Week 35
MATH
Caleb is learning to tell time and practiced reading minutes and hours on clocks. In addition to the worksheets, he played a game where he sets and reads toy clocks. He also did worksheets that cover addition facts he learned this year.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb did lots of reading this week. We read a book of poems and he picked a spring poem to copy and illustrate in his workbook. He practiced his handwriting; his lowercase printing is really improving. He read books aloud and we read together.
SCIENCE & S.S.
Caleb read more plant-themed books, including a story about nature's decomposition cycle. He is still checking on his own decomposing project and taking care of his seedlings. "Some things did what I thought they would in my composting project. I was surprised that the apple and lettuce are already gone. I couldn't even find them!"
We read a series of books on friends, and discussed the theme of making and being a good friend. Caleb continued to practice his Spanish, learning new words for body parts and numbers, and reviewing the alphabet, days of the week, phrases and questions.
ART
Caleb made different sized clay pieces in his art class that he will assemble together to make into a big wind chime project. "We rolled clay flat and used tools like forks, butter knives, and other things, to decorate them. Then we cut them and they are going to dry and then get fired."
P.E.
"I love to play outside! I like to play hide-and-seek with my brother Smiley and I like to ride my bike."

Roots
It is pretty amazing how big the root structure can be on trees. When they blow over they can leave a big hole! Did you know what alfalfa is? Did you know the roots of an alfalfa plant go down almost six feet! It helps them get lots of water and nutrients.
My dad helped dig a well when he was a teenager. One time a rattlesnake showed up while his brother was down in the well. He was pretty scared that the snake would end up in the well with him!
You have a guitar and piano at home? Your house is always going to be filled with music!

Week 34
MATH
Caleb finished Lesson 30 and took his test. It is the last lesson in his 1st grade math book! For the remainder of the school year, we are going to work on telling time and some fun sheets that will review everything he has learned.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb learned how to read and write words starting with WH. He also learned how to add ED to the end of words and he came up with a sentence that used an ED word. He worked in his handwriting book. We read from Little House on the Prairie, finished reading the Frog and Toad Are Friends stories, and Caleb practiced reading out loud.
S.S. & SCIENCE
Caleb continued to do lots of activities outside, planting, observing, and reading about nature. The picture he drew shows things underground AND above ground. "I wanted to show what it is like under the dirt where the roots grow. All plants have roots. Big plants have big roots and little plants have little roots." Caleb got to see, up close, how big tree roots can be when he found some upturned trees after last weekend's wind storm.
Caleb is learning the names of body parts in Spanish and is filling in a worksheet as he learns them. He also has learned several different songs to go along with the numbers, letters, days of the week, and body parts that he knows.
ART
Caleb made some fun decorations in art class, including light cover decoration for his room. He also learned to make many different paper airplanes (which inspired one of the Language Arts pages pictured above.)
P.E.
Caleb has a great time exercises and playing outdoor games with friends.

LANGUAGE ARTS
This week Caleb learned the new sound the digraphs CH and TH make. He is working in his handwriting workbook, which has focused on proper forming of uppercase letters. He practiced reading aloud from a variety of books he picked out, and we also read together. “Little House on the Prairie was my favorite story to listen to this week. They made a well, which was a very dangerous job, and Indians came in their house.”
SCIENCE & S.S.
Caleb worked on his Loch Ness Lapbook. Some of the mini-books he made included a flag of Scotland and drawings of animals in Loch Ness.
Caleb took care of his seedlings that he started, checked on his decomposing experiment and read some Spring stories.
Caleb practiced his Spanish lesson this week.
ART
Caleb continued to work on a group structure at his art class. At home he made thank you cards. “We got some special things last week! I made thank you cards for Elinor who gave us a piano and Sarah who gave us a guitar.”
P.E.
Caleb has been riding his bike a lot. He takes walks and hikes. At his weekly movement class he participated in the fun games and exercises.
