Did you finish Little House in the Big Woods yet? Does your family store up food for the winter, too? I think hunting for food would be fun too, but what if you didn't find any game? Being able to go to the store if you don't find your own food is kind of nice.

I really liked the picture you drew of the house with all the lights and electrical wires. Electricity is another one of those nice things we have that not everyone in the world has. It sounds like you figured out how to make static electricity. Have you ever been to the bowling alley in Colville? My daughter love to go there because their carpet creates good electricity. She's always shocking me there!

I'm sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope you're feeling better now.

Week 23

MATH
Caleb's math lesson this week concentrated on subtracting one and zero.  He practiced counting backwards by one and recognizing and memorizing subtraction facts with one and zero.  As always, his daily worksheets include practice with story problems.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb began learning word with consonant blends.  He learned BL, BR and CL.  We have been reading Indian stories so the sentences he made up often had to do with Indians.  He enjoyed drawing a clown next to a list of CL words.

We continued reading a variety of stories including books about George Washington, Indians, and Little House in the Big Woods.

SCIENCE/S.S.
Caleb continued to learn about electricity through fun books ("Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip was really silly!") and games, including a computer game that allows you to "test" the conductivity of different materials in an electrical circuit.  The books we read taught Caleb about many things, including how power plants make electricity, how electrical appliances work, and how magnetism can make electricity.  Of course, many experiments with magnets and static electricity followed.  "Shocking people was funny!"  The picture Caleb drew was after making an inventory of the many things in a house that use electricity.  He drew the electrical appliances, light bulbs, and the wires that are connected to a power plant.
We continued reading about George Washington and early American history.  Caleb practiced with his Spanish DVD, which has a fun song that teaches the vowel sounds.  It also included a cooking demonstration with plantains, as the DVD lessons usually also teach a cultural aspect of Mexico.

ART
Caleb was sick this week and couldn't attend his art class.  He did get a chance to work on his knitting project at home.

P.E.
One sunny day early this week gave Caleb a chance to go for a hike outside.  Then the snow and cold weather came, and Caleb was sick for a few days, so he had to spend time resting up at home this week.

Week 22

MATH
This week Caleb began learning subtraction, the opposite of addition.  He used the pictures on his worksheets and his blocks to understand how to subtract.  "This is like solving for the unknown!" Caleb said, as he realized he already knew how to figure subtraction problems.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb finished the Word Families Reader that he had been reading from each week to practice different word endings.  He wrote words for UP and UT.  Caleb practiced reading aloud and I started reading the book Little House in the Big Woods aloud to him.  I asked Caleb to think of and write a sentence that summed up the first chapter we read.  He also drew a picture of the log cabin in the woods and their pig in a pen.

SCIENCE & S.S.
This week we started reading a book about George Washington.  The stories we have been reading in S.S. and L.A. take place throughout America's history.  We have discussed the differences from life in America today.  "I think I would have liked living back then and getting to hunt wild animals!"

Caleb practiced with his Spanish DVD and made a color wheel to help him remember the Spanish words for colors.

We continued to read from our books about rocks and minerals, and Caleb learned about where diamonds, gold and other precious gems come from.  We are going to start learning about electricity in many different forms, and as a fun intro to that Caleb and some friends got to dissect an old radio.  The first thing they learned was how to safely make sure electrical units are unplugged before being worked with!  The project turned out to be the highlight of his week.  He was able to recognize parts inside the radio, like magnets and springs, and he was amazed at the many wires and cool-looking pieces inside.

ART
Caleb made more Valentines for friends this week and worked on fiber projects in art class.  Tomorrow we will attend the Artist Reception at Greenwood Institute d'Art where artists are displaying hand-spun and dyed wool, carved wooden bowls, handmade paper, and paintings.  The artists will be there to meet with and discuss how they make their artwork.

P.E.
Caleb did movement activities with the other kids in his Art & Movement class.  They also had a lesson on emergency situations and how to call for help, including knowing their home phone number.  Caleb got to practice by calling home 3 times by himself during class!

volcanoes

Do you think you might like to see a volcano close up now? A teacher I know went to Hawaii a couple months ago and walked out to look at some lava from an active volcano! That might be a little scary if you ask me. Your lapbook looks really good, and your smile in the picture is awesome!

I really liked your sentence about the nun running for fun in the sun! It might get kind of hot running in that nun outfit!

Week 21

MATH
In Lesson 17 Caleb learned more addition  facts, doing lots of practice with them.  He also continues to apply the math he has learned in everyday situations, like keeping track of his money and helping to bake and cook at home.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb worked on word endings UB, UG, UM, UN.  He continues to practice reading daily.  "My favorite book this week was Agent A to Agent Z."  It was an alphabet book about secret agents.

SCIENCE & S.S.
In the past few weeks we have read many books about Volanoes, watched some videos, and Caleb made some mini-books about Volcano facts he learned.  This week Caleb put these together to make a lapbook about Volcanoes.  He made a nice Volcano picture out of construction paper for the cover.  "I liked seeing what volcanoes look like and how dangerous they are."  The volcano books led into learning about how different types of rocks are formed.  We had some sunny days where we hiked and collected many rocks to examine with a magnifying glass and compare to pictures of rocks in books.

As our economics lessons over the last weeks have had us reading books about early Americans and trading with Indians, we have also been discussing other people and events in American history and read a story about Abraham Lincoln.

Caleb practiced words in Spanish and listened and sang with songs in Spanish.

ART
Caleb began making heart-shaped Valentines and also worked on his fiber projects.  We attended a show with many different singers and musicians.  Afterward, we discovered www.sfskids.org (from a CVA newsletter) which was full of fun ways to learn about instruments and music.  Caleb also practiced his recorder.

P.E.
Some nicer days this week gave us a chance to do some hiking, in addition to Caleb playing games with the kids at his Art & Movement class.

Hola!

I had never heard of snow candles before. Those sound like a lot of fun! I bet those work best when it's really cold outside.

Are you pretty good with using chopsticks? I do okay with them if I eat slow, but if I'm really hungry a fork works better!

Week 20

MATH
In Lesson 16 this week, Caleb learned about addition problems that equal 9.  He continues to practice with word problems, writing numbers in words, solving for the unknown and geometric shapes.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb practiced with word endings OT, OW, and OX.  He liked a story about a boy and a fox that hid in boxes.  He also drew a man named Bob next to a campfire to go with his OT sentence.

In addition to the stories in Caleb's reading book, we read a biography about Pocahontas and read from a book of Chinese tales and legends.

SCIENCE & S.S.
We have been doing a lot of cultural studies this week.  Caleb got to start working with his Spanish kit.  In addition to learning colors, vowels, and greetings, he made a Mexican flag and listened to a Mexican legend.   We continued studying economics while reading a biography about Pocahontas and a short story about Christopher Columbus and the first Europeans trading with Indians.  The Chinese New Year is this week, so we began reading a book of Chinese tales and playing some games.  Today Caleb made decorations and fortune cookies and helped plan a Chinese meal we'll eat with chopsticks tonight.  He got his new globe this week so all the activities are centered around finding places on the globe.  "I liked making decorations and getting ready for Chinese New Year the best.  I can't wait for our dinner tonight!"

Caleb started some worksheets to go with his Volcano studies that he is going to put together to make a lapbook.

ART
Caleb worked a little on his sewing and fiber projects.  He also got to make snow candles which he enjoyed doing.  "I made a hole in the snow, put a wick in the hole and poured melted beeswax in the hole.  When it dried it was a candle!"  On Wednesday we burned the candles and talked about Imbolc, an ancient Celtic holiday that marks halfway between Winter and Spring.  Today Caleb made Chinese lanterns out of construction paper for the Chinese New Year.

P.E.
Caleb attended his weekly Art & Movement class where kids play games and do exercises together.
