Week 20

MATH
In Lesson 16 this week, Caleb learned about addition problems that equal 9.  He continues to practice with word problems, writing numbers in words, solving for the unknown and geometric shapes.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb practiced with word endings OT, OW, and OX.  He liked a story about a boy and a fox that hid in boxes.  He also drew a man named Bob next to a campfire to go with his OT sentence.

In addition to the stories in Caleb's reading book, we read a biography about Pocahontas and read from a book of Chinese tales and legends.

SCIENCE & S.S.
We have been doing a lot of cultural studies this week.  Caleb got to start working with his Spanish kit.  In addition to learning colors, vowels, and greetings, he made a Mexican flag and listened to a Mexican legend.   We continued studying economics while reading a biography about Pocahontas and a short story about Christopher Columbus and the first Europeans trading with Indians.  The Chinese New Year is this week, so we began reading a book of Chinese tales and playing some games.  Today Caleb made decorations and fortune cookies and helped plan a Chinese meal we'll eat with chopsticks tonight.  He got his new globe this week so all the activities are centered around finding places on the globe.  "I liked making decorations and getting ready for Chinese New Year the best.  I can't wait for our dinner tonight!"

Caleb started some worksheets to go with his Volcano studies that he is going to put together to make a lapbook.

ART
Caleb worked a little on his sewing and fiber projects.  He also got to make snow candles which he enjoyed doing.  "I made a hole in the snow, put a wick in the hole and poured melted beeswax in the hole.  When it dried it was a candle!"  On Wednesday we burned the candles and talked about Imbolc, an ancient Celtic holiday that marks halfway between Winter and Spring.  Today Caleb made Chinese lanterns out of construction paper for the Chinese New Year.

P.E.
Caleb attended his weekly Art & Movement class where kids play games and do exercises together.
