Good job on the writing. Soon you will be carrying a notebook with you and writing all the time!
Did you know that there is a lady that lives around here that paddled a kayak all the way to the Pacific Ocean! She had to go around some dams, but she went down the entire Columbia River! That might be fun, but I think I'd rather take a motor boat!
The bag you're making looks nice. What are you going to use it for?
Caleb is in 1st Grade this year and enrolled in Columbia Virtual Academy.
As Mom and Teacher, I'll give a brief description of what he has done in each subject for the week.
Don't miss Caleb's comments in red!

Week 19
MATH
Caleb did Lesson 15 this week in math, which taught him addition problems that equal 10. He did well on the exercises and we also did some card games to help reinforce the addition he learned and help him memorize the important 10 facts.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb worked on word endings OG, ON, OP, and ORE. He practiced reading aloud the paragraph that goes with each word ending and then wrote words in his MLB. He thought the paragraph with OG words was pretty funny and he wanted to copy it. Although there are mistakes and he still wants to write in mostly uppercase letters, it was the longest amount of writing that he volunteered to do.
In addition to reading from his phonics books, we finished reading Paddle-to-the-Sea. "At the end of the story, the boy that made the canoe was grown up. He found out that Paddle-to-the-Sea actually made it to the sea and it made him happy."
SCIENCE & S.S.
We read some more about volcanoes, how they are formed and, using a map, looked at where around the world they can be found.
Caleb set up his own "store" as we began discussing economics. He learned about different goods and services that people sell and do for others in the community. "I sold bagels I made and books and other things. When people don't have enough money I trade with them." Today we read a story about an Algonquin Indian girl and what life was like in her community. People in her tribe didn't use money and instead traded each other for things and we made comparisons about the economies of different communities.
ART
Caleb worked on stitching a bag he is making in art class. It is not quite finished but I was impressed at how well it is coming. He picked out the different fabrics he wanted to use and has hand-stitched three sides by himself. He plans to complete it next week. This week some kids at the class made puppets and Caleb helped make a puppet stage out of cardboard.
P.E.
Caleb did indoor exercises, as well as took walks in town in the slushy snow.

Great Barrier Reef
Are you ready for some warmer weather and snorkeling? I'm starting to get a little bit tired of all the slush. I'm ready for some sunshine!
I had some magnets that went on a pencil when I was a kid too. They were a lot of fun! It is kind of weird to watch that magnet float!
I liked your picture of the corn. Before you know it will be planting corn!

Week 18
MATH
In Lesson 14 this week, Caleb learned to double and add 1, in problems like 3+4, 5+6, 7+8, etc. He practiced counting by 10's and reviewing shapes. Caleb also is learning how to write and read numbers 1-10. He noticed, "Eight is sure a funny word; it doesn't look at all like it sounds!" He did well on all the exercises this week and will take the test tomorrow.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts, Caleb practiced with more word endings he learned. The picture shows corn cob stalks he drew for his OB words. This week Caleb made Memory game cards by writing out words on many different cards. He enjoyed playing Memory with his brother and me and it was a fun way for him to practicing reading words.
Caleb practiced reading aloud from his phonics books and I read to him short stories from an assorted reading book, and we started reading a great book called Paddle-to-the-Sea.
SCIENCE & S.S.
Paddle-to-the-Sea has been a fun book to read alongside our map studies. The story follows a wooden canoe from Lake Nipigon in Canada through many adventures while it travels the Great Lakes. (It will eventually find it's way out to the ocean but we aren't there yet!) At different points throughout the book Caleb follows the canoe's path on a map.
Caleb has learned to find the North and South Poles on a map, and this week he got to start working with a magnet kit to learn more about magnetic attraction. He made a compass and had a lot of fun experimenting with magnets and seeing that the opposite sides attract each other. "My favorite thing was doing a magic trick! I put a round magnet around a pencil and another round magnet on top of it, with the same poles facing each other, so the top magnet couldn't touch the bottom and it looked like magic was making it float."
We also read books about volcanoes and we read a book about natural wonders around the world, like Mt. Everest, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Sahara Desert, and used maps to locate them. "I liked hearing about the Great Barrier Reef the most. I love water!"
ART
Caleb started learning to knit this week. He is able to cast on and do rows of the knit stitch. He wants to start making a blanket!
P.E.
At his weekly Movement class, Caleb got to do tumbling on mats and other indoor exercises, and he also took a winter walk outside with friends.

Tug of War champ?
Your tug of war game must have been fun! You did a good job on all your language activities. are you wishing you could go to a tropical island? I see you chose palm trees and a beach for a couple of your pictures. I don't think our snow is going to last much longer around here since it has gotten so warm.

Week 17
MATH
Caleb did Lesson 13 in Math, which covered square and rectangle shapes and counting by 5's, and as always, review of previously learned addition facts and practice with story problems. Caleb will take the Lesson 13 test tomorrow.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb worked on writing and reading word endings. He really enjoyed a tug-of-war game we played where each side had to call out a word with a certain word ending before they could pull the rope. "I won 3 times, using words with IT, ED, and AY." Below is a sentence he wrote with IT and IX words, which he had fun illustrating (his bed had a tiger and lion, and he put a shark under mine). He also worked on a project that reinforces vowel sounds. We cut out lots of pictures out of magazines and he glued them to the vowel page that makes the sounds in the pictures. For example, the E page in the picture has pictures of egg, bed, red, beach, tree, teeth and more.
Caleb practiced reading aloud from his phonics books. We continued to read the bird book together and short stories from a reading book.
SCIENCE & S.S.
We worked with the world map some more this week, singing songs, playing games and doing role playing about living in different places in the world after finding them on the map. Caleb drew an arctic picture, adding words that were in his picture.
ART
Caleb did more painting this week, including painting salt clay figures he made.
P.E.
It was a cold, cold, snowy week so there weren't any outside activities this week! At Caleb's Art & Movement class the kids stayed inside and set up obstacles using the slides, balance beams, and trampolines.

Snowshoeing expert
It seems like you must be really good at snowshoeing! The picture makes it look easy, but I bet it could tire you out after awhile. My Dad did a snowshoe race one time in Alaska. He did okay until he tripped and fell flat on his face!
Great job on your last math test! A perfect score is pretty impressive.
The book about birds sounds interesting, but I don't think making a nest in a cow print sounds very safe for the little bird. It could be bad if the cows come back and there were eggs!
I'm wondering if you've ever been to Canada? Then you'd have been to two states and two countries.

Week 16
MATH
Caleb complete Lesson 12 in math this week. The lesson taught adding doubles: 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, and up to 9+9. Throughout the exercises he memorized many of the facts he learned, and also practiced his skills of adding 8's and 9's. Today he took the Lesson 12 test, getting all the answers correct.
LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb worked on word endings including ILL, IM, and IN, writing and reading words that had the endings. He wrote sentences with words he learned. Today, he read aloud a short story about fishing that had lots of IN words in it. When he was done he went "fishing" for words that were written on many fish-shaped pieces of paper. I would read aloud a sentence and he would spot a word from the sentence I read on a paper fish and then retrieve it with a "fishing pole" (a magnet on a string). He really liked this game and afterward drew an underwater picture with lots of sea life and the sentence "The fish swim and swim." (It is a little hard to see it amongst the illustration.)
Caleb has been enjoying listening to The Burgess Bird Book for Children where every chapter talks about a different bird amongst a happy forest of bird friends. "I like hearing about the birds that make their nests in different places; one nest was in a cow print on the ground!" We have also been reading from a Dr. Suess collection.
SCIENCE and S.S.
Before the winter break, Caleb had been working with Washington state maps. This week, he moved on to U.S. maps. He put together a puzzle of the U.S., becoming more familiar with the names of the states and seeing how much they differ (some states border oceans, some have mountains, some are large, some are small, etc.) Caleb drew an outline of the U.S. and colored in the bodies of water including the oceans and the Great Lakes and some of the states, including his home state and a few of the other western states. He could find his home on his map and when he colored Oregon he realized, "I've been to TWO different states!" The size of the U.S., and his own size in comparison seemed to really be sinking in!
We also began looking at world maps. I read a story about harp seals and we spent time looking at where in the world the harp seals live, what other animals live in the arctic, and how different life is for those that live near the poles.
ART
In art class, the students did some work with fabric and fiber. They are learning how to tie and braid material and make different things out them. They are working on making bags. Caleb also did some painting.
P.E.
Over the weekend, before the weather turned cloudy and snowy again, Caleb spent a few sunny afternoons snowshoeing. It was a fun way to exercise and Caleb never got tired of being able to move easily over the snow. Here he is, having got much farther than the rest of us.
