MATH
In Lesson 14 this week, Caleb learned to double and add 1, in problems like 3+4, 5+6, 7+8, etc. He practiced counting by 10's and reviewing shapes. Caleb also is learning how to write and read numbers 1-10. He noticed, "Eight is sure a funny word; it doesn't look at all like it sounds!" He did well on all the exercises this week and will take the test tomorrow.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts, Caleb practiced with more word endings he learned. The picture shows corn cob stalks he drew for his OB words. This week Caleb made Memory game cards by writing out words on many different cards. He enjoyed playing Memory with his brother and me and it was a fun way for him to practicing reading words.
Caleb practiced reading aloud from his phonics books and I read to him short stories from an assorted reading book, and we started reading a great book called Paddle-to-the-Sea.
SCIENCE & S.S.
Paddle-to-the-Sea has been a fun book to read alongside our map studies. The story follows a wooden canoe from Lake Nipigon in Canada through many adventures while it travels the Great Lakes. (It will eventually find it's way out to the ocean but we aren't there yet!) At different points throughout the book Caleb follows the canoe's path on a map.
Caleb has learned to find the North and South Poles on a map, and this week he got to start working with a magnet kit to learn more about magnetic attraction. He made a compass and had a lot of fun experimenting with magnets and seeing that the opposite sides attract each other. "My favorite thing was doing a magic trick! I put a round magnet around a pencil and another round magnet on top of it, with the same poles facing each other, so the top magnet couldn't touch the bottom and it looked like magic was making it float."
We also read books about volcanoes and we read a book about natural wonders around the world, like Mt. Everest, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Sahara Desert, and used maps to locate them. "I liked hearing about the Great Barrier Reef the most. I love water!"
ART
Caleb started learning to knit this week. He is able to cast on and do rows of the knit stitch. He wants to start making a blanket!
P.E.
At his weekly Movement class, Caleb got to do tumbling on mats and other indoor exercises, and he also took a winter walk outside with friends.
