Caleb is in 1st Grade this year and enrolled in Columbia Virtual Academy.

As Mom and Teacher, I'll give a brief description of what he has done in each subject for the week.

Week 32

MATH
Caleb finished Lesson 28 and took his test.  He started Lesson 29 which teaches subtracting 5's.  His reading of story problems has really improved the last few weeks and he can now easily read written numbers.  (For L.A. this week, when I asked him if he could think of words that start with TW he immediately said "TWO!")

LANGUAGE ARTS
Caleb worked on consonant blends SW, TR and TW this week.  He liked the tongue-twister we made up for SW; "Try saying 'I like to swing and swim in the sweet summer sun' three times fast!!"  (That is what his picture is illustrating.)  He also started working in a handwriting workbook which helps him practice neatness and accuracy writing letters and words.  We started reading Frog and Toad Are Friends, which had a great springtime setting, and continued reading Little House on the Prairie.  Caleb practiced reading aloud, his favorite book this week being the funny story May I Please Have a Cookie?

SCIENCE & S.S.
We started seeds this week.  The picture shows Caleb comparing some itty, bitty, spearmint seeds with a giant potato seed.  During our outdoor experiments we found something special:  "We found a bird's nest, in a low part of a willow tree.  It was empty.  When we looked at it a few days later there were three eggs in it!  They are robin's eggs.  They are tiny and blue.  Later, the same day we saw the eggs, the mother bird was sitting on them.  She has been on the nest a lot and we might get to see the baby birds when they hatch!"
For S.S. we learned about Cinco de Mayo.  We read books and today Caleb made a Mexican craft called Ojos de Dios, or God's Eye. We also practiced our Spanish lessons and got to make Mexican Wedding Cakes (small, yummy cookies) as part of it.

ART
Caleb enjoyed the Cinco de Mayo craft, and also participated in a building project at his art class.

P.E.
Caleb practiced bike-riding and went for several walks and hikes this week.
