Caleb is in 1st Grade this year and enrolled in Columbia Virtual Academy.

As Mom and Teacher, I'll give a brief description of what he has done in each subject for the week.

Week 6

MATH
Caleb completed Lesson 3 and has started Lesson 4, using the addition symbol and adding zero.  He did not want to use the blocks much for these lessons; he thinks he can cruise through the worksheets without needing the hands-on manipulatives.  Story problems were presented, along with review from previous lessons.

LANGUAGE ARTS
A sad thing happened today for Caleb; his kitty died unexpectedly.  Caleb has been pretty upset all day and when I asked him if he wanted to share something he did this week for this blog, he only said, "My kitty died..."  In Language Arts, Caleb was to work on the Letter O today and he asked if he could do pictures and words about his cat Tom.  There is an O in Tom's name, so it seemed appropriate.  Here are the pages he did in his MLB.
Trying to use words with the letter O that related to his kitty, he wrote: lots of fun, tame Tom, so nice, and I love Tom.  While talking about O words, he also learned about O being a magic vowel that gets to make two sounds.

Earlier this week he wrote a letter to his grandparents who visited last week, and he did some other letter pages in his MLB.  We also have been reading aloud Pippi Longstocking books, Halloween poems, his Highlights magazine that arrived this week, and we started the 1st book in a series called A-Z Mysteries.

SCIENCE
In response to whether or not Caleb would ever walk on the moon, he said, "Nah, I don't want to walk on the moon.  I want to be a scientist in the ocean!"

Even if he doesn't want to be an astronaut, we try to keep studying space fun.  Caleb learned a song about the planets that helps keep their names in order.  We also did stories and colored pictures relating to the planets and the moon.  He is continuing to draw in the moon on his calendar as we watch  the changes through the moon phase.

We are also keeping a close eye on the seasonal changes happening in nature.  Caleb made bird feeders out of pinecones as we discussed birds and migration.
This is fun!  I'm going to feed lots of birds!"

SOCIAL STUDIES
The moon phase study has kept us using and learning about calendars.  We are also reading about Halloween and other different celebrations around the world, like All Saint's Day.  We are going to start Halloween crafts and projects soon.

ART
Caleb spent some time practicing the recorder (the notes B and A).  His art class at Greenwood usually involves a variety of projects.  This week he started a project with indian corn, worked with stencils, and painted.  Here is Caleb at Greenwood with a picture he made.

P.E.
Caleb has been walking every week with a friend while she walks her dog.  He is learning the importance of exercise for both people and animals.

Swimming class continues to be filled with fun while Caleb practices and gets exercise.  After his instruction time was over this week, he spent another half an hour snorkeling on his own and then tried out water volleyball with his brother.
